Madelyn Hubbs, a 12-year-old patient ambassador for Shriners Hospitals for Children® — St. Louis, had no idea of the surprise in store for her as she sat in a restaurant with her family last October.
“Do you know what I’ve been doing the past few months on Saturdays?” asked her father, Jeff. “No,” responded Madelyn with a puzzled expression. “Well, I was out becoming a Shriner,” said Jeff as he pulled his new red fez out from under the table and placed it upon his head.
Madelyn, who is missing an arm, has been a longtime patient of the St. Louis Shriners Hospital. She was so excited, she crawled under the table to reach her dad and gave him “the biggest hug,” recounted Jeff. “We’ve been helping the hospital for years,” Jeff said. “But I thought it was time to make it official.”
What It Takes to Be a Shriner
Shriners Hospitals for Children is the philanthropy of Shriners International. Jeff thought about joining for a few years, but with work and family obligations, he put it on the back burner. Once he made the firm decision to become a Shriner, he began taking classes.
In the classes required to become a Mason (a prerequisite for becoming a Shriner) Jeff learned the core values of Freemasonry. After completing that training, Jeff took advantage of a “Chance to Advance” session, which included all the activities he needed to participate in to achieve the status of Master Mason and become a member of Shriners International.
Taking an Active Role
The entire Hubbs family have been donating time, energy and toys to Shriners Hospitals for Children — St.Louis as long as they can remember. It seemed right to become a member of the fraternity, explained Jeff. He is now looking forward to taking an active role in the Moolah chapter’s many activities and fundraisers, along with his family.

Cleft lip/palate and sports medicine added to hospital specialties
(SHREVEPORT, La.) In a move that will dramatically expand the scope of medical care provided, Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Shreveport has added services for patients with cleft lip/palate and sports medicine needs to their current orthopaedic care specialties.
As of August 2012, renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon G.E. Ghali, DDS, M.D., FACS, will provide services for children with low-severity cleft lip and palate conditions through the Shreveport hospital. Dr. Ghali is a current director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the founder of the Ark-La-Tex Craniofacial and Cleft Center in Shreveport. He leads a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, dental specialists and therapists in providing care, outreach and education to children and families with craniofacial conditions.
In addition to cleft lip and palate services, Craig Springmeyer, M.D., has rejoined our facility to bring sports medicine care to Shreveport Hospital patients. Dr. Springmeyer, who previously served the Shreveport facility as an orthopaedic surgeon, will now offer diagnosis and treatment to patients relating to injuries received during sports-related activities. In addition to his active orthopaedic practice, Dr. Springmeyer serves as team physician for a number of high school and other sporting teams throughout the Shreveport area.
“The addition of both cleft lip/palate and sports medicine to Shreveport Hospital care specialties provides an opportunity to offer vital services not readily available throughout the south central United States,” said Shreveport Board of Governors Chairman Harvey Johnson. “We welcome the opportunity to expand our scope of services and identify new patients for whom we can truly make a difference.”

(TAMPA, Fla.) As parents and children prepare for the new school year, new backpacks are likely on many shopping lists. There are many factors to consider when choosing the most appropriate one.
When shopping for a backpack it is important to find one that is no wider than the child’s chest, has adjustable and padded straps, includes a waist strap, is made of lightweight material and has several compartments.
“A backpack that is adjustable helps bring the weight closer to the upper part of the back, where the body can more efficiently carry the load with larger muscles of the back,” said Robert Cho, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Los Angeles. “A waist strap helps to distribute the load to the lower body and legs so that the shoulders do not bear all of the weight.”
It is also helpful to make sure a child is only packing what is necessary for the day and to distribute these items evenly throughout the compartments, with the heaviest objects placed closest to the child’s back. It is recommended that kids carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their bodyweight in their backpacks.
“Too much weight in a child’s backpack can lead to muscular strain and back pain, which can limit physical functioning and can even lead to poorer overall health,” said Dr. Cho. “I recommend either minimizing the amount of textbooks carried in a backpack, or using a rolling backpack, if allowed by the child’s school.”
Placement of the backpack is also important. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the best place to carry a backpack is between the neck and curve of the lower back – not far below the waist, as is often popular among the kids.
Additionally, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends that parents encourage their children to talk to them about any pain or discomfort that may be caused by a heavy backpack, and not ignore any back pain in a child or teen.
Shriners Hospitals for Children has prepared a backpack basics tip sheet to help guide parents and children in the selection and proper use of backpacks.

| (l-r) Jérémy Gabriel and Hunter Woodall |
Hunter Woodhall from Syracuse, Utah, and Jérémy Gabriel from Quebec City, Canada, have been selected as the health care system’s patient ambassadors for 2012-2013. The announcement was made on July, 4, 2012, after the premiere of their video: “Two Worlds Apart – One Place of Hope” during the Imperial Session of Shriners International (National Convention) in Charlotte, N.C.
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care at the health care system’s 22 facilities annually, regardless of their ability to pay. The Ambassadors will share their stories to inspire others and raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Meet Hunter Woodhall and Jérémy Gabriel, the Athlete and the Artist.
The Athlete
He plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles; he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all with two prosthetic legs.
Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fibular hemimelia of the left leg. The condition is a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf, which may require amputation or bone-lengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his right ankle was fused.
The Woodhalls had a difficult time finding information about Hunter’s conditions. After exploring options that offered no real hope, the Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children.
After consulting with a team of experts at the Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with the amputation of Hunter’s feet. After his surgery – at just 11 months old – Hunter was soon walking and running around. He hasn’t stopped since.
Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah, where Hunter became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City. Hunter is a straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City has always provided options to help Hunter be able to do anything he wants to do, including fitting him with some of the first Flex-Foot Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use.
The Artist
He has sung for both Céline Dion and the Pope; he has recorded two albums and co-authored a book. He was born deaf.
Jérémy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City, Canada, was born prematurely with severe facial malformations and other complications requiring intensive care. Jérémy was finally diagnosed at 6 months with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. In addition to head, skull and facial deformities, children with this condition generally have absent or malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss.
Jérémy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada at the age of 5 for treatment. There, the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D., a plastic and craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Implant. Jérémy received his implant in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery, Jérémy was fascinated with sound, and discovered he could sing. In fact, he has perfect pitch. Jérémy is scheduled for additional surgery later this year to reconstruct his cheekbones, as well as surgery on his jaw, which should improve his breathing, chewing and appearance.
Jérémy now attends a high school specializing in performing arts, where he is an excellent student. He is preparing for a career in the music business.

On June 23, Past Imperial Potentate Nick Thomas was inducted into the DeMolay Hall of Fame, in Louisville, Ky. The honor is especially well- deserved, given the 60-plus years Imperial Sir Thomas has devoted to Masonry.
“To be inducted into the DeMolay Hall of Fame takes a special individual who has succeeded in all avenues of life,” said Jeffery Kitzmiller, executive director of DeMolay International. “Given all the contributions Imperial Sir Thomas has made to his brotherhood and philanthropy, I cannot think of anybody more deserving of this honor.”
DeMolay is a community-based international organization for young men ages 12-21, which emphasizes leadership skills and character-building within a program of social, sports, and community service activities. The organization is modeled after Freemasonry and has more than 1,000 chapters worldwide. The founder of DeMolay was Frank S. Land, a Past Imperial Potentate and personal friend of Noble Harry S. Truman.
For Thomas, of Fontana, Calif., DeMolay was the beginning of his journey to becoming a Shriner.
“I was 14 years old and my father, who was a Mason, had to practically drag me to my first DeMolay meeting,” recalled Thomas. “I’m glad he did because it was one of the biggest turning points of my life.”
In 1950, Thomas was initiated into the Fontana Chapter of DeMolay. He is a Past Master Councilor of the Fontana Chapter of the Order of DeMolay, and was awarded the Legion of Honor and Chevalier Degree from DeMolay.
Thomas served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 10 years and was raised a Master Mason at Fontana Lodge #653 after his honorable discharge in 1964. He is a Past Master of Fontana Lodge and a 2000 Hiram Award winner. Thomas is a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite bodies and holds the honorary 33rd degree from the Scottish Rite.
In 1966, Thomas joined Al Malaikah Shriners in Los Angeles. He was chairman of the Imperial Membership Committee from 2001-2006, and also served as chairman of the Imperial Athletic Committee from 1996-2006. Thomas served as Imperial Potentate in 2006-2007 and as Imperial Recorder in 2009-2010. Currently, he serves as chairman for the International Development and East-West Shrine Game® Committees.
During the induction, representatives of DeMolay presented Thomas with a video on his life and a bronze plaque. Michael E. Berry, President and CEO of the Kentucky Derby Festival, was also inducted into the DeMolay of Hall of Fame. Thomas and Berry are part of a unique group of people deserving of respect and emulation. Past inductees include Chairman of the Board of Trustees Doug Maxwell, Past Imperial Potentate Raoul Frevel, Noble John Wayne, Noble Mel Blanc, Bill Clinton and Walt Disney.
The event was an emotional and memorable one for Thomas.
“Being a member of our Masonic family has been an incredible journey that all started kneeling at the altar of my DeMolay Chapter,” said Thomas. I can’t thank the DeMolay enough for all the friendships and making me the person that I am today.”
