The Pilgrimage of Nahanna
Shortly before his death, Mahomet initiated the first pilgrimage to Mecca. Leading forty thousand (40,000) followers from his home in Medinah to the Holy City of Mecca. This began the custom that still holds to this time.
Modern pilgrims usually go to Medinah, the home of Mahomet, and continue on from there to Mecca. There they visit the Holy of Holies, kiss the black stone and drink from the sacred well.
In this story, we see Nahanna, who Cochrane says answered to many names, as a wealthy prince making the pilgrimage to Mecca. Cochrane estimates that the wealth of Nahanna would be about one and a half million dollars by our American standards of 1913.
That Nahanna made the pilgrimage is beyond doubt. How much good it did his soul is another question.
He has a huge caravan. Took most of his harem with him. Had his camel drivers bring ice from the mountains. This certainly was no humble trip.
In this painting we see Nahanna seated with his retinue. He is attended by one of his harem favorites. His face expresses complete boredom at the games he watches.
Their form of sport was animal baiting. Conflicts between man and beast. If Nahanna shows lack of concern the man in the right foreground certainly should.
