The Soul of Araby
As depicted by Cochrane, the Soul of Araby is the Rug and Rebec.
The Rug is necessary for any Moslem to pray to Allah. The Rebec is an ancient form of the violin used to supply ritual and harem music.
Cochrane does not say what exotic sounds the Rebec produced, but to tell you that it was made (in its early form) from half a cocunut shell and the gut of a sheep, may give you some indication.
Mr. Cochrane also stated in his book, "Following the Fez", that from what he had seen on his two visits, Araby might be in danger of losing its soul.
