Our Famous Murals
Introduction
1860-1946
The murals in our banquet hall depict biblical situations that relate to our Arabic origin. They are interrelated and have a sequence.
The murals in this temple were painted by the late Harry Hayman Cochrane; a life member of Kora Temple.
Noble Cochrane was a deeply religious man and a very ardent student of the bible. His knowledge of the biblical recordings of the events depicted in these murals greatly influenced his interpretation and their authenticity.
The murals were painted over a period of 5 years. Many of them were done on Mr. Cochrane's studio, later to be mounted on the walls of our banquet hall. Some, including the sixty foot mural, "The Conquest of Jerusalem" was painted in place.
Mr. George Treet, president of the brokerage firm of E. Rawlings and Company of Boston and New York and a noble of Kora Temple, took a great interest in Mr. Cochrane because of his talent in the field of art and gave him an all expense paid trip to the Holy Land.
Upon his arrival he was asked if he would like a guided tour but he refused. He felt that he would be able to find his own way around because it seemed to him because of his studies of the bible that he was in a familiar place. He traveled by himself, researching the objects that had been and were to become subjects of many murals now found in both Masonic and non-Masonic buildings throughout this area.
We are indeed justly proud of noble Cochrane's immense contribution to our Shrine home.
