Screening Clinics
Because We Care
13 Screening Clinics This Year
On Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, Kora Shriners will sponsor a free screening clinic for possible admission to a Shriners Hospital at 13 different locations throughout the south-central Maine area. For a listing of these locations, visit korashriners.org.
Screening will be performed by volunteer medical professionals from the community to determine if the child has a condition that can be treated at a Shriners Hospital. The clinic will enable local children and their families to avoid unnecessary long-distance travel to a Shriners Hospital in order to determine medical eligibility.
The types of conditions treated are:
- scoliosis and spinal deformities
- clubfoot and related deformities
- osteogenesis imperfecta
- spina bifida/myelodysplasia
- neuromuscular disorders/cerebral palsy
- hand problems
- hip disorders
- cleft lip and palate
- juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
- Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
- chest-wall deformities
- missing limbs/limb deficiencies
- leg length discrepancies
- metabolic bone disease
- skeletal growth abnormalities
- spinal cord injuries
- burn injuries.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of pediatric specialty hospitals, founded by the Shrine, where children under the age of 18 receive excellent medical care at no cost to the family. There are 18 orthopaedic Shriners Hospitals, three Shriners Hospitals dedicated to treating children with severe burns, and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopaedic, burn and spinal cord injury care. Shriners Hospitals are located throughout North America - 20 in the United States and one each in Mexico and Canada. These "Centers of Excellence" serve as major referral centers for children with complex orthopaedic and burn problems.
There is never a charge to the patient, parent or any third party for any service or medical treatment received at Shriners Hospitals. Shriners Hospitals accept and treat children without regard to race, religion or relationship to a Shriner. Any child may be eligible for treatment at a Shriners Hospital if the child is under 18 and if, in the opinion of the hospital's chief of staff, the child has an orthopaedic or burn condition that Shriners Hospitals can treat.
All of the orthopaedic hospitals are equipped and staffed to treat children with congenital orthopaedic deformities, problems resulting from orthopaedic injuries, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including cleft lip and palate treatment at some facilities. Three of the orthopaedic hospitals (in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Sacramento) also have special programs dedicated to caring for children with spinal cord injuries. The Shriners Hospitals in Boston, Cincinnati, Galveston, and Sacramento treat children with acute, new / fresh burns; children needing plastic reconstructive or restorative surgery as a result of "healed" burns; children with severe scarring, resulting in contractures or interference with mobility of the limbs; and children with scarring and deformity of the face.
Since the Kora Screening Clinics started in 1968, more than 1000 children have been examined, and most have been treated at various Shrine Hospitals.
If you know of a child Shriners Hospitals might be able to help, please call our toll-free patient referral line at 800-322-5905 or the Kora office at 782-6831. Kora Shriners represent Shriners from Kittery to Skowhegan. For more information, visit our website at www.KoraShriners.org.
