Mission
The Band is one of the Kora's oldest units, having been formed in 1929. Its mission is to provide a well-rehearsed and disciplined band for Kora Shriners furnishing music for Shrine gatherings and such other appearances as may be consistent with the nature and purpose of the Shrine subject to the approval of the Potentate. The band also promotes fellowship among its members.
Membership
Current band membership is 50 with no specified upper limit. The applicant must have demonstrated musical ability and a willingness to attend rehearsals and performances on a regular basis. He must in most cases own his own instrument.
Uniform and Dues
A uniform is required for concerts and parades and is supplied by the unit. There are NO dues required. Members usually need to provide their own instruments. The Band will assist in transportation costs to the Northeast Field Days. All other transportation costs are up to the members.
Attendance
Attendance is required at the annual meeting and rehearsals are held twice monthly for the concert band. Rehearsals for other groups are self-determined. Band rehearsals are held at the Temple on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 7:30 P.M. No rehearsals during the summer. In addition to the concert and marching band, the unit sponsors Dixieland, Dance and German Bands. Membership in the concert band is a prerequisite to membership in one of the others. The Band participates in 8 to 10 parades per year and presents several community concerts throughout Southern Maine. The Band participates in the Northeast Field Days Festival of Music Program each year.
Application
Applications are available from the Director, Officers and members. Membership is by invitation and election. Types of membership are Active, Life and Honorary.
Miscellaneous
In addition to the Concert / Marching Band, we also have smaller ensembles within the group; Dance Band, German Band and Dixie Band. Each of these groups perform at various events throughout the year as well as at the Northeast Field Days.
