Youth Leads the Way
As Shriners, we do a fair job of raising funds for our Hospitals for children, but when it comes to fund raising for charitable needs, the Rain bow Girls of Maine lead the way.
I had the extreme pleasure of representing our Illustrious Potentate at this years Grand Assembly Session for Maine Rainbow in Bangor. As Kora’s representative, along with Anah’s Potentate Tyler Dunning, we were presented with a “representative sample” of aluminum can tabs and over 30,000 Campbell soup labels. The total aluminum tabs came to a whopping 3 to 4 TONS !!!
Each year, Maine Rainbow Assemblies collect these items. The aluminum tabs are sold to a metal recycler with funds going directly to the hospitals. Soup labels are also donated to the hospitals and are used to purchase needed equipment for the children who are patients.
The tab project has been an event for Maine Rainbow beginning in 1991 as a “special project” of the Grand Worthy Advisor, and has generated over $35,000 in contributions since its inception. Likewise, the soup label collection has sparked some “friendly competition” between Maine Rainbow and their sisters in Canada – who also collect the labels and present them at Maine’s Grand Assembly. In recent years, Canada has come out on top – collecting more labels than Maine – but remember, their winters are a lot longer and colder than ours !!
Just in case you’re wondering how many tabs are in a ton – there are approximately 1,300 tabs per pound – making 2,600,000 tabs per ton!!! Someone is drinking a lot of canned beverages – be sure to pull those tabs off your cans, and get them to the Kora Office or any Rainbow Assembly – it’s worth the effort.
NOTE: Be sure to collect ALUMINUM tabs only, as the metal recycler cannot separate them – a simple test is to put a magnet on them – if the magnet picks them up, it’s not aluminum.
