Mission
The Kora Highlanders is a Bag Pipe / Drum Band. In 1979 a group of Nobles envisioned putting a Pipe Band together. They started practicing on their own. On September 28, 1981, the pipe / drum unit was accepted as a new unit of Kora. The band was and is still called the Kora Highlanders. The original unit consisted of 10 members. Present membership is 18.
Membership
Membership is offered to any Shriner who shows a commitment to becoming proficient with either the Great Highland Bagpipe or the drums. Prior experience with music or reading music are NOT prerequisites to becoming a piper!
Uniform and Dues
Most of the uniforms are supplied by the unit. The members need to buy their own shoes, hats and other small miscellaneous items. The drums are supplied by the unit but people playing the bagpipes buy their own. Dues are $10 per year.
Attendance
Practices are held every Wednesday night at the KORA Center, and instruction is always free. We request that members make as many practices as possible. We play at numerous events every year (approximately 20) including most KORA activities, many parades, and other events as requested.
Application
KORA Nobles that might be interested in being a Highlander should contact a band member. They fill out an application and attend practices. After they have been attending the practices for six months, the band votes to accept the new member into the band.
